This Bloody Mary is made from scratch from a mix of vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire and horseradish and loaded with add-ons like celery, a snow crab claw and candied bacon. The resulting cocktail isn’t overly thick, since you don’t want to feel like you’re drinking a sauce, and it has just the right amount of spice from a combination of horseradish and hot sauce.

This cocktail is perfect for any Super Bowl party. While it is typically a brunch drink (the hair of the dog), I enjoy drinking it while watching football. I will be sipping on this while watching my Patriots play in the Super Bowl (again) this year.

Key Bloody Mary Ingredients

  • Bacon – The maple candied bacon adds a sweet and smoky flavor to the drink. Of course I end up snacking on the rest of the batch because who can resist bacon.
  • Old Bay seasoning – If you’ve never had Old Bay® it is a zesty seasoning blend originating in Baltimore. It’s made with 18 spices like celery salt, red pepper, black pepper and paprika and often used to complement seafood. It can be found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores.
  • Vodka – Vodka is a clear, distilled spirit that doesn’t necessarily have as many hard and fast rules as other liquors. It’s created by extracting starch from various grains, fruits and vegetables; commonly potatoes, wheat or rice. Vodka at its base is less flavorful than other spirits (unless it’s flavored vodka).
  • Hot sauce – Hot sauce is as a seasoning in the tomato juice mixture. I recommend using a vinegar-based hot sauce for this recipe – it adds a good balance of acid to the recipe. My favorite is Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce though Tabasco also works well.

How to Make a Bloody Mary

For the maple candied bacon:

  1. Heat oven. Preheat the oven to 400ºF (200ºC).
  2. Add bacon to a rack set over a baking sheet. First, add a wire rack over an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet (with high edges). Next, add the bacon to the rack. Brush the bacon with the maple syrup and sprinkle with half the brown sugar.
  3. Bake the bacon. Bake for 15 minutes, then flip the bacon and brush with the maple syrup and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar. Continue to bake until the bacon is crispy, about another 15 minutes. Let cool.

To make the bloody Mary:

  1. Make the Old Bay rim. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a pint glass. In a shallow bowl stir together 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning and the kosher salt. Dip the glass in the salt mixture so it evenly coats the rim.
  2. Mix the bloody Mary. Fill the glass with ice then add vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire, horseradish, hot sauce, remaining Old Bay seasoning and pepper, stirring together until thoroughly combined.
  3. Assemble the cocktail. Add a piece of the candied bacon (reserving the rest for more bloody Marys), celery stalk and snow crab claw. Serve immediately.
