I took a cocktail class with a friend a few years ago and one thing I learned from it is how good kumquats are! Kumquats may look like mini oval oranges but they are much more bitter. I had always written them off until a mixologist had taught us to muddle them. The mix of the sugar, citrus and herbs makes for a refreshing summer kumquat cocktail.
Gin + Herb + Fruit + Club Soda = Herby fruity gin fizz
Key Ingredients in This Kumquat Cocktail Recipe
Gin – Gin is made by distilling grains like wheat or barley with botanicals. To be considered gin, juniper must be prominently featured and a notable flavor profile. Other common ingredients used to flavor gin are orange, coriander, cardamom, pepper or licorice. The base of gin is a neutral spirit, often vodka.
Kumquat – Kumquats are small citrus the size of a grape with a very tart flavor. Muddling them with the sugar helps to offset the tartness.
How to Make a Rosemary Kumquat Gin Fizz
Add to a cocktail shaker. Add the kumquats, rosemary and sugar to a cocktail shaker.
Muddle. Muddle until the juices release from the citrus and the sugar dissolves.
Shake the cocktail. Add the gin and ice then close the shaker and shake vigorously.
