Once fall hits, it’s time for all of my favorite holidays starting with Halloween and rolling right on through to Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love everything about Halloween (other than scary movies). I take the time to come up with fun homemade costumes and decorate the house with pumpkins, webs and gourds. I even like to go on hayrides.
This is my version of a Halloween cheese and charcuterie board fit for an adult costume party, without the kitschy additions. No pasta that also doubles as brains here, just some spooky-looking strategically picked cheese and accoutrements!
This charcuterie platter comes together without a ton of DIY elements. First, start by choosing a dark serving board – I like to use either a dark grey marble or chalkboard/ slate as a spooky base to make it as dark as Halloween night itself.
Next, pick the cheeses for the board. As a rule I include an aesthetically pleasing number or cheeses, about 3 to 5.
Look for a yellow or orange cheese such as crowd-pleasing sharp Cheddar (I like Tillamook), or the more unique Mimolette, a hard, orange colored cow’s milk cheese inspired by Edam. Mimolette is aged and has an almost fudge-like texture.
I also like to serve a creamy, aged cheese (which often has an almost wrinkly looking exterior) such as Vermont Creamery’s ash ripened Bonne Bouche goat cheese or triple cream Brie. I also love a pungent blue cheese filled with blue veins, like Gorgonzola.
If you’re looking for a baked option, try this recipe for pumpkin baked Brie with homemade maple pumpkin butter!
Fill in the board with an assortment of dark fruits like blackberries and figs and also use bright green grapes. I try to stick with a Halloween-inspired dark magic color palette of black, purple, orange and bright green to stay on theme.
Mini pumpkins and persimmon also make for great adds. Look for dark colored crackers filled with figs and nuts or ones cut into fun shapes like ghosts.
